:: Food Galore ::
I just came back from my trip. Hell there's a lot to write.
Day 1
I arrived at about 8pm or so. I got a message from my boss Mike to wait on the left side of the arrival hall. But when I arrived there was no one familiar there. I got a little scared, felt intimidated when the men rushed to me asking where I was heading to. About half an hour later, Mike came with Leo, the producer, and Imawan the editor. It was almost an hour drive to their place in Pulomas Barat. But the whole drive on the highway that overlooks the city was simply marvellous at night. It reminds me of Bangkok, but instead of their 7-Eleven plantations, this time round it was Dunkin Donuts. There are Dunkin Donuts at every corner of the place.
They place where they work is this 2 bungalow houses side by side, (on the left is the house, the right is the office), so I get to stay at one guestrooms in the office bungalow. Trust me, each bungalow is huge... plenty of rooms. Placed my luggaged, washed up, and I was taken to a sidewalk stall that serves good chicken satay....and surprise....EXCELLENT bread. They toasted normal sliced bread, cut up and mashed bananas in between, and to top it up they sprinkle chocolate rice and grated cheddar cheese. Goodness, it was fucking good. Went back to sleep...missing everyone at home
Day 2
Had meeting in the morning. Did some preparation...which is not much. Was shocked when Mike told me the rate for renting a light (like one redhead) is about S$5 a day. Mike said its crazy. I said it is, too. The rest of the day I spent time reading 'The Bell Jar' in my room in the hot afternoon, and falling asleep and eating chocolates. I was woken up at 7.30pm by Leo, who said we're gonna have a meeting with our hosts at Starbucks. I got changed, and we headed down to Plaza Senayan. There, Leo introduced me to Lolo, our female host, who's really chatty and funny. We waited for the male host, and when he came, me and Lolo were surprised cos this guy had huge afro hair just like the guy in the Yahoo! ad, and his name is Alex. We all chatted and brief to them the whole concept of the food show. But the two hosts get along so well, despite that was their first meeting, and they clicked right away and never stopped talking and making us laugh. I went back feeling all good and inspired.
Day 3
Filming starts. I was introduced to a really young crew, Rico and Boey. And they're both my age, still attending film school. We shot at our first bakmi stall, which serves really good bakmi (chicken noodles). Had free food...then left to rest for a while, before leaving for another bakmi stall, where I ate the most delicious crispy noodles ever. They crew made fun of poor Mike there, who couldn't understand any of the jokes they made, when all of us were bursting out laughing our heads off cos the hosts were so hillarious. This day I found out that a large pack of cigarrettes cost me only S$1. This was also the day I realised Indonesians never stop talking. All the way from the moment they met, to the long car rides, to the time they wave goodbyes for the day, the literally never stop talking, which is one thing I and Mike find amazing.
We left again at night for another round of filming. By this time, everyone was sick of noodles. But the hosts went along smoothly with the food tasting. We were so damned tired after the last location, and Mike suggested we drive to Illusions Cafe by the lake. So despite being shagged, we made our way to the open air cafe cum pub by the lake which is really breathtaking. I don't drink, so I ordered a mango squash instead. As Leo and Mike know the owner of the joint, they got a couple of free drinks, and Rico and Lolo were dancing Las Ketchup away in their seats, and I enjoyed the beats of Safri Duo. It was a great night.
Went back to the office, where Rico and Boey played billard outside my room till late, and I watched Mike and Leo trying to solve the mysteries in The Silent Hill on playstation. I got sleepy, so I went to bed with the lights on.
Day 4
I woke up late. We left in the afternoon and headed for a Japanese restaurant,Kampachi. Our host were wearing Japanese kimonos, and we interviewed a celebriy called Edo and his family. He has a cute curly-haired daughter called Itamar, who starts to dance to The Ketchup Song immediately once you hum it to her. We ate there for lunch, and stayed all the way till six, chatting and laughing and poking fun at Alex cos he loves Doraemon so much that he has the ringtone on his mobile. Then he and Lolo started pinpointing characters to all of us, and I ended up being Suzuka, but the best was Leo being Nobita, with the spectacles and his nerdy looks. We left, and the rest of them had to go for church for 3 hours, so me and Alex went to Plaza Senayan to hang out, and my battery was dead. We smoked and he told me of this really true but surreal story of his fish, and showed pictures of his wife, and we ended up watching Chicago. Three hours later, we're off with the rest of them to have our conro (ribs with soup)...mmmm.
Went back and watched my bosses played playstation again.
Day 5
Had a meeting with a writer, and another guy who wants to do a motor racing show in April. Had a good lunch of fish a chips that cost me S$4. Went for last minute shopping for stuff, but didn't manage to get much. I was already missing the Rico and Boey and Lolo and Alex, and deep inside I wonder if I'll ever get to meet them again. I have felt so at ease amongst their laughter and light heartedness at everything. I started to get emotional on the way back to the office, with just the 3 of us in the car. Once we arrived, I took a shower, packed my stuff, and Mike and me left for the airport...back to Singapore
Im picked me up at the airport, i'm so happy to see my baby. I had a massive tummy attack, so went to the toilet. We ate Delifrance that late night, and left for the carpark where he parked his scooter, Pinky. I was carrying my heavy backpack cos he was staring his scooter, and as I walked sideward in the narrow gaps of the parking lots, I stepped backwards and my leg caught on something and I came crashing to the ground on my back. Im thought I was fooling around, and when I started screaming and crying in pain he started to panic and ran to the back of the bike. He tried to calm me down, and carried me to the curb and I was just crying non stop, "Pain...pain!" He kept going, "Where? Where's the pain? You have to tell me!" I managed to get home safely, and my mum bandaged me up, and I'm still limping now.
So that's it so far. I have so much more to say. But not tonight.
